The couple first met in a pub in Sydney, where the Crown Prince attended the 2000 Summer Olympics. Their official engagement in 2003 and marriage the following year were the subject of extensive attention by international news media which portrayed the events as a modern fairytale romance between the crown prince and an Australian-born commoner.
